So why Soul Burger?

He says: A combo of friends of ours making this one of their regular haunts and a lovely invite from the owner Amit got us to Sydney’s only ‘flexitarian’ burger joint one fine Sunday. I have to say the ethos around this place (ethically sourced meat etc) is one I wish more other establishments would strive towards.

She says: My god daughter lives in the east and any excuse to get to see her (and our friends her mum and dad) is worth it! Also, Soul Burger got in touch and asked us if we would be keen to come past (for real! The the lovely Bianca from For Foods Sake mentioned the blog to the owner who sent us  bit of info and our interest was piqued).

What did you order?

  • The Cow with bacon – $13
  • The Chicken – $11
  • Red Fries – $4
  • Green Fries – $4
  • Kumara Fries- $5
  • Vanilla Malt shake – $7
  • Salted Caramel shake – $7

Tell us about the Cow Burger?

He says: A cracking burger. The patty was incredibly flavoursome and the soft bun was a real surprise. The bacon was as good as any I’ve had in a burger this year and the mustard aioli was on point. They’re generously sized and are impressive value for money as well.

She says: For me the bacon and patty were the stars of this pretty awesome burger. The meat was just really good quality and you could taste it. Nice balance of fat and salt, with a bacon taste that held its own.

So then, how did you find the Chicken Burger?

She says: When I see a grilled chicken burger on a menu these days my heard sinks because too often I find that the chicken is a thick slab of tasteless dryness. It’s rarely nice. This burger gave me new hope for grilled chicken burgers everywhere! This is probably the best grilled chicken burger I have tried, the chook was chopped up a bit, seasoned with herbs and cooked to perfection. It wasn’t too thick and retained a lot of moisture  and, man alive there was flavour to boot. And ethical, boom!

He says: We rarely have much luck when it comes to a grilled (as opposed to fried) chicken burger but boy did this little fella buck that trend. The chicken benefited from being myriad of fillets as opposed to one big piece of breast and in doing so avoided the trap of being dry. It was incredibly juicy, moist and flavoursome and everything else, highlighted by a cracking herb-mayo, served to produce a seriously delicious burger. I’d eat this every day of the week and maybe even add cheese and bacon next time.

And what about the sides?

He says: I was a big fan of both the green and red fries which were crunchy hotel beer battered chips with some tangy (red) or herbed (green) seasoning and damn they went down well with the aioli provided. Am not a massive fan of Kumara chips in general so I’d suggest I’m not the right person to judge these ones. The shakes were a slight let down and although thick (the way I like them) I had trouble discerning one from the other.

She says: Great chips – the seasoning on both was nice, I think I was more team red than green. The kumara chips were so rich, I had about three and couldn’t fit any more in. I think these would be great if you are on a diet, forced to go here and didn’t want to eat a burger but also didn’t want to be weird diet person watching people eat (madness but sometimes the way). The milkshakes were not at the stellar heights of the rest of the meanl but I think there may have been a mix up with our order as the salted caramel tasted decidedly vanilla.
