So why D’munchies?

She says:  This is local to us, and seemed like a cute idea. When we heard on the internet that they would be serving deep-fried, ravioli nachos and our eyeballs changed to thumbs up signs and we hightailed it over there.
He says:
Sydney’s first ‘stoner café’ as a concept would have tempted me to travel as far out into the suburbs as need be. The fact that this place opened close to the top of our street had us headed there pumped and suitably famished in their first week of business.

Tell us about the Dutch Oven Burger?

He says:  Very similar in style to the type burger you’d order in a nice hotel via room service in the 90’s. The patty needed salt though and the bun, although a better brioche than I’ve had of late, was literally dripping in oil. Tasty initially but lacking a diversity in flavours and far too rich in the long run.


She saysI disagree with His salt point, I think there was definitely enough. This burger had heaps of flavour, heaps of sauce and heaps of oil. I was a fan but we both did live to regret it. It was so buttery and rich that about half an hour after we gutsed these burgers, they knocked us for 6 and we were forced to go home and watch movies all day. The quintessential stoner past time (apart from the obvious)!


So then, how did you find the J-Rizzler Chicken Burger?

He says: The chicken seemed to be fried for too long as the batter had fallen off the chicken itself. Definitely had a good crunch to it though and the whole burger would have improved tenfold with about triple the amount of (Cheetohs cheese) sauce as I couldn’t taste any of it. The inclusion of a, also slightly overcooked, hash brown did win me over though.


She says: Wow – that was some crunchy chicken. Dare I say, it was too crunchy? A whole side of my bit was just dry, crunchy batter. The other side, with a better chicken to batter ratio was good though. The hashbrown scored some points and with the cheese sauce this burger also played a massive role in our taking in an afternoon movie marathon.


Now, what about the sides?

She says: Hrmmmm curry cheese fries sounded interesting and tasted – well – interesting? The cheese wasn’t melted which always makes me sad and the curry sauce had this strange tang to it. Eating them was a bit like watching car-crash television, I couldn’t stop consuming it but I didn’t like it. The chips by themselves were real winners though. I really liked these fries – they were the reconstituted potato style and tasted like the salt was actually IN the chip rather than just on it. Delicious!

He says: The chips themselves were crunchy and had a great batter to them. The curry cheese chips didn’t really do it for me. The idea is sound but I think they might need to do a little work on the curry sauce itself as a perfect marriage with cheese and chips it does not form.

So why Jacks?

She says:  I have been obsessed with this place ever since it was a kebab shop that closed because it was vandalised. He used to claim that the kebab shop was superior to Istanbul down the road but I have stood by my boy Istanbul because I am 100% sure it saved me from alcohol poisoning in my early 20s a million times over. He and I stalked this place every day it was under renovation and when we were popped our heads in during the renos and the lady inside informed us that it would be a ‘fast food’ restaurant we had our fingers and toes crossed for burgers. And we were pumped when the neon sign was revealed and our dreams came true.


He says: This place is located literally around the corner from our house and after hearing that it was ‘fast food’ moving into the space we’ve been peering in for months trying to decipher what would open up. When the doors opened and there was talk of them being Sydney’s answer to Shake Shack we were there for their first Saturday of service.

Tell us about the Cheeseburger with Onion?

He says: Immediately hit with what is up there with the most flavoursome patty in the city – perfect salt to meat ratio on this one and it disintegrated into my mouth. My bun was a bit on the doughy side and I could have done with double the amount of sauce provided. The onions gave a great crunch. All in all a very welcome addition to the burgeoning Sydney burger scene.


She saysI loved this. The bun is awesome, almost the sweetest milk bun I have had, but it worked. The bottom was soggy but it actually didn’t bother me. The meat was cooked well and the lettuce had a good crunch. I was dubious about the fried onions but they were a really good addition – added a bit more crunch and another flavour level. Great burger – highly recommend.


So then, how did you find Bacon Cheeseburger?

She says: Very much like the cheeseburger with onion but without onion and with bacon. It is hard to pick favourites between these burgers as they are both very similar but I think the juicy, flavourful thick cut bacon takes this one over the line for me. This will sit in the hall of great burgers of my life. Love it and have been trying to drop it into conversations casually to entice people to come back to Jack’s with me.


He says: Great quality bacon that formed an effective team with that aforementioned patty. My bun on this one was a little better but could have done with being a little softer. Again not enough sauce for my liking.


Wow – you have three burgers?? Well, what are your thoughts on the Vegetarian Burger?

She says: It was after eating this burger that the insightful He and I realized that we have no place reviewing vegetarian burgers. The answer to us trying a vego burg will always be ‘It was good, but it could have done with some meat’. This burger had the same bun, sauce and salad elements as the other two angels but the patty was a rice and bean patty that fell apart as you ate it. It was to me, a very strange choice.


He says: Hard to judge as I wouldn’t normally order this but the patty (seemed like it was made of rice and black beans) had a strange texture and taste that I didn’t think went all that well with the rest of the burger. I’d come back here for the cheeseburgers but in the off chance I was craving a vego burger I’d go around the corner for Raven’s Eye’s tempeh number.


Now, what about the sides?

She says: Crinkle cut fries make normal fires look like idiots. They are far superior. These were golden and seasoned perfectly. In the war of the fries I would join the crinkle cut army and I would die for their cause (unless there was a waffle fry contingent, in which case things could get complicated). Oh and that Pistachio Frozen Custard Shake – get outta town, it was awesome. Just a slight pistachio flavor, it wasn’t too sweet but it was good and thick.


He says: High points for the frozen custard shake having a great consistency and not overdoing it on the sweetness front. The crinkle cut fries were simple but delicious (and must be dunked in a side of the burger sauce!).

So why Hoochie Mamma?

He says: The amazing She and I are now Newtown residents and which warranted a complete devotion to being on point with all the inner west burger options. I’m normally about as likely to believe in Santa Claus than I am to believe anything written in the Daily Telegraph but I noticed they’d listed this in their 10 best burgers in Sydney list and considering the close proximity to our home it we had a date .

She says: We noticed this place a while ago and couldn’t get over the name – it means a woman with questionable morals right? (Well that is what the Online Slang Dictionary told me.) Anyway it is very close to our new house and we were feeling lazy and I had already said no to going to this place too many times – so we went.

What did you order?

  • The Hoochie Double  Burger – $15.90
  • Caramel Thick Shake – $5


Tell us about the Hoochie Double Burger?

He says: Stale bun, dry tasteless canteen sausage meat styled patties (didn’t need two of them), and overly sweet beetroot relish unfortunately made this a rather underwhelming lunch. The aioli and cheese was good though!



She says:  It’s hard when a burger like this shows up on your plate. My instinct is to try and find something positive to say to make the harsh truth a bit softer. But there were no redeeming features. I have no idea how this ever got onto any list other than ‘Burgers I Will Never Eat Again’.



Now, what about the sides?

She says:  The thick shake was weird  – it was watery and had little chunks of ice in it. And it didn’t really taste of anything but water-milk. The fries were pretty standard, made more appealing by the sad state of the burger but not good enough to draw me back any time soon.


He says: The fries that arrived with the burger were of the standard skinny shoestring variety and did well when coated in aioli. The thick shake was completely devoid of any thickness and tasted a whole lot like icy water with a mild hint of caramel and maybe a touch of milk to finish it off. I think I’ll add The Daily Telegraph’s appraisal of burgers in the same boat as their politics. I hope that boat sinks as well.

So why Cuckoo Callay? 

She says:  This place has always struck me as a bit weird because of its strange position, sitting just a the top of Newtown Station. He read so much blog chatter about it thought that it quickly floated to the top of our list.

He says: Saw this place get a lot of love in the local food blogosphere and I was pretty gutted I missed their Bacon festival. News of a popcorn chicken burger on the menu and a free few hours in Newtown had us there in a heartbeat.

What did you order?

  • Wild Boaring Burger – $21

Tell us about the Wild Boaring Burger?

He says: Considering the sheer magnitude of burgers we smash through it’s always nice to try somewhere that’s trying something a little different. Unfortunately this was just too rich for me. The Cajun spiced pulled wild boar and the bacon relish were a little on the sweet side for me which was further complicated by serving it on a brioche bun that was dangerously close to dry croissant territory. The wild boar had a unique taste to it but I didn’t really see how it fit in with the rest of the ingredients. The choice to use manchego cheese however was a good one!


She says:  This burger was incredibly rich and the flavours were heavy and strong. For me the sweetness of the brioche with the boar and the bacon relish was overwhelming and far to oily. As there is in love, I feel like there is the perfect burger for each person. While this was far and away not my cup of tea, I can recognize that this burger has the potential to make someone very happy one day. That person would have diabetes. And maybe die of heart disease. But they would bask in the sweet richness of this burger.


So then, how did you find the Pop Goes the Chicken Burger?

She says: This burger looked beautiful but just didn’t succeed in wowing me. The ‘popcorn chicken’ was a thick chunk of chook, a bit dry and overcooked and with a fairly unmemorable coating. This sauerkraut was not my sort of sauerkraut, salty and smooshy without any body or tang, I actually couldn’t take it and rudely (hopefully subtly) scraped most of it off. Again the flavors were a bit punch-in-the-face-esk.


He says: The popcorn chicken itself was hard to fault and again the addition of manchego (which was sharp, tasty and oozed out of it) had me wondering why more other places don’t do the same. Unfortunately I had the same issue with this one as I did with the wild boar burger as on the whole is was just too rich and cloyingly sweet. I would think if they changed the bun and swapped the sauerkraut out this might have improved dramatically.


And what about the sides? 

She says: These sweet potato fries were extravagant, huge chunk’s of sweet potato fried ’till crispy and crunchy. Again, given how sweet they are, after such a sweet meal I could only handle a few, but I do think these wedges could make someone with a real hankering for sweet/salty goodness very happy. I want to point out though that even though these burgers weren’t ground breakingly awesome – the service here was above and beyond. The staff seemed really happy to work there and were lovely, positive and attentive. I will definitely go back for their breakfasts, which look really bloody good.

He says: Unfortunately for us these guys don’t have too many sides available (although the ramen looks off the freaking chain!) but luckily the wedges we went for hit the spot. Sweet potato perfectly cooked with a crunchy exterior rubbed in delightful spices and made even more perfect when doused in the spiced aioli it’s served with.

Raven’s Eye

So why Raven’s Eye?

She says: Two reasons. Firstly, it is so close to my house, and any new Newtown small bar is worth checking out, particularly in these times where Newtown slowly morphs into old Kings Cross at about 10:30 each night. Secondly (and this is the FULL DISCLOSURE bit) He has a friend (a good man) who has something to do with this joint. Actually also a third reason is that we saw them bringing in a whole tray of perfectly soft milk buns one day and from then on the writing was on the wall.


He says: This place is conveniently located around the corner from the gorgeous She’s house and after watching a friend devour one of their, what looked to be amazing, cheeseburgers a few weeks prior we knew we needed to give this a go pronto. Full disclosure I also have a mate who is somehow involved on a minor scale at this place as well.

  • Royale With Cheese – $10

Tell us about the Royale with Cheese burger?

He says: Wowzers. This is fantastic. A thick, juicy, perfectly medium rare pink patty sit in a bun so soft it seems steamed with a whole heap of American cheese and mustard. When you’re patty, bun, cheese, and sauce combo are this good the addition of any other ingredients would be superfluous. Mary’s better watch its back as there’s a serious new challenger to the Newtown Burger throne.


She says: BOOM. Great burger. Soft bun. Meaty, well cooked, good quality meat. Mustard and perfectly melted cheese. Hit every note well. This is a burger I would go back for many many times (if I had time between trying all these other new burgers in order to bring you the latest and greatest… Who am I kidding, bring on summer and I will be having a Bloody Mary in my back yard and one of these little beauties every second weekend..actually, I am not sure whether they take away. Loyal reader – please investigate and report back).


So then, how did you find the Vegetarian Burger?

He says: The idea of a tempeh patty on a burger inspires a deep dread within me but this was a very pleasant surprise. The temepeh is actually flavourful and delicious and when linked with a delightful pickled cabbage slaw and bang on chipotle mayo we have arguably my favourite vegetarian burger in OBM’s history.


She says: Who could have guessed that a tempeh burger (and yes I did need to see what He wrote it to check the spelling) could taste so good. I don’t think the photo does this one justice, it was way better than it looks here! Also – these burgers were both $10 WITH fries. that is almost unheard of these days. If they can mate a vego treat like this work so well,  I would love to see what they did with a fried chicken burger… would be keen to try it!


And what about the sides?

He says: The Mac’ n’ cini’ balls were rich addictive balls which oozed gorgeous gooey cheese and tasty chunks of pig’s head. The smoked tomato jam brought the whole thing together and almost threatened to steal the show on its own. The popcorn school prawns were solid but raised to another level when coated in a delightful arrabiata mayo. Said mayo was also a hit with the fries which had a delightful seasoning spread on top. Overall a top meal which was also incredibly well priced.


She says: Mac and cheese in all its forms is always a favorite with me. And here – with the smokey tomato sauce – wow – another dish that really delivered. The balls were cheesy and delicious. The prawns were also good. And another great maker of maccas style fries, thin and crispy with just a bit of soft in the middle and a  good pinch of salt and seasoning.
