The Lady Hampshire Verdict: 8/10

Beef Burger: 9.1/10

Chicken Burger: 6/10

Sides: 6/10

So why the Lady Hampshire?

He says: Great pub to drink at and dog friendly. Loved the burgers at their other joint (The Lord Gladstone) and hence was pumped to finally get into the bad boys here.

She says: This is another great pub from the guys that brought you the Lord Gladstone. Like its older brother, this place has good vibes and a “no gronks” policy. They also serve house smoked meats on a Sunday (the house smoker out the back so if you sit outside, you can smell the smoke while you eat and you may go home smelling like you’ve been camping). Also, we brought the dog and we  outside, which means you won’t get a peek here at the cool reno job they have done inside. Worth a visit and don’t miss the awesome mural featuring all your Australian icon faves.

What did you order?

  • The Camperdowner Burger – $22
  • The Fried Chicken Burger – $17
  • Buttermilk Fried Chicken Wings – $18

Tell us about the Camperdowner Burger?

He says: Fuck yeah. A melt in you mouth patty surrounded by double American cheddar, streaky bacon, onion rings, fried egg, grilled pineapple, beetroot, tomato, coral lettuce, dill pickle, and a sensational burger sauce on a soft steamed milk bun. This was a monster! Think your classic American cheeseburger walked into a bar and met and old school Fish N Chip style Australian classic with the lot.

She saysGreat burger. I am generally a bit suss on burgers “with the lot”, the massive proportions usually make them more trouble to eat than they are worth, but this was epic greatness. Perfect proportions of each of the many inclusions, good sauce ratio and great burger bun. I would go back for this – but only on an empty stomach because it was huge.

So then, how did you find the Fried Chicken Burger?

She says:  We were in quite early on a Sunday so it could have just been like when you get the first coffee of the day and it’s not quite right, but this chicken burger wasn’t the best. With chicken thigh, American cheddar, bacon, lettuce and Sriracha mayo, it had all the makings of a great burg – but the chook was pretty dry and it was totally overshadowed by the greatness of the Camperdowner. I think this might be worth trying again on another day to compare.

He says: Might have just been an off moment in the kitchen with this one but my fried chicken was 80% batter 20% chicken. T’was also a little dry.

Now, what about the sides?

She says:  The chicken wings weren’t my favourite but the chips were great – standard pub fries, no bells, no whistles done well.

He says: The fries were standard but delicious nonetheless. Wasn’t a massive fan of the seasoning/batter on the fried chicken wings. Might just be a personal taste thing there.

Pub Life X Barrio Chino Pop Up at Deus Café

DSC01088Pub Life X Barrio Chino Pop Up at Deus Café verdict: 9.5/10

Beef Burger: 9.7/10

Chicken Burger: 9.4/10

Sides: 8.5/10

So why Pub Life X Barrio Chino?

She says: This was two of the greats coming together. Any burger fan knows both of these joints spit out some awesome snacks. It would be crazy to have missed it. In saying that – I think it closes in a couple of days so if you want to check it out, get a wriggle on!! The overall verdict should have lost a few points because it took so long for us to get our burgers (but the food was so good.. and we are suckers). We waited for what felt like a really long time and I had to be restrained from stealing food from other tables. By the time they arrived I was panic-hungry (thus the blur in some of the photos).

He says: Considering the parties involved this is a fairly redundant question.

What did you order?

  • The Cheese Burger with Bacon – $16
  • The Fried Chicken Burger – $14
  • Chicken Nuggets – $12
  • Dirty Fries – $7

Tell us about the Cheese Burger?

He says: Close to perfection. Everything I loved about Barrio Chino and Pub Life (and burgers in general) all rolled into one heavenly package. Between the patty, M’Clures pickles, American cheese, soft bun and to die for dirty sauce you have a burger you could pretty much start a religion for. Also massive props for the crunchy bacon add on. This is the swag shit right here.

She saysFirstly can I just point out again that we were RAVENOUS by the time our burgers came. That is why the first picture sucks so heavily. I am the photographer, please accept my apology. But this burger? Poetry! This was a smashing little burger. I second everything He says above. Just a dream burg.

So then, how did you find the Fried Chicken Burger?

He says: Like the cheese burger but replacing the world class patty with fried chicken that as good any I’ve come across. Crunchy on the outside whilst being perfectly moist and juicy on the inside. The green siracha mayo took on champ status as well.

She says: The fried chicken was perfect, the great bun and condiments held it together the chicken version and all balanced really well. This was another really special burger.

DSC01076

Now, what about the sides?

He says: The buttermilk fried chicken nuggets were a very generous serve but I preferred dunking them in the dirty sauce than the provided Gochujo hot sauce. The dirty fries were immense (all fries should be coated in dirty sauce and cheese sauce from here on in)

DSC01080

She says: The fried chicken sauce was straight out weird. Theory is that it might have been off – it was super sour,  vinegary and not nice. Luckily the chicken itself was amazing – crunchy but still really luscious in the middle –  and was fine by itself or as He mentions dunked in the dirty sauce. The fries were full on but they were super moreish and pretty great.
